How to Care for Rented Camera Equipment

Rental equipment should come back in the same working condition it left in. Most damage is preventable with careful transport, sensible setup and a few simple habits on set.

Transport equipment in its protective case

Keep cameras, lenses and accessories in their supplied cases or padded bags when they are not being used. Avoid loose equipment in vehicles where it can slide, knock into other kit or be exposed to moisture.

Protect lenses and sensors

  • ✓ Use front and rear lens caps when lenses are off the camera
  • ✓ Change lenses in a clean, sheltered position where possible
  • ✓ Never touch the camera sensor
  • ✓ Do not clean optics with clothing or rough material
  • ✓ Keep liquids, makeup and aerosols away from exposed optics

Use stands and grip safely

Lighting and grip equipment becomes dangerous when badly balanced. Extend stands correctly, use suitable weights or sandbags, keep cables controlled and do not overload arms, clamps or stands beyond their intended use.

Outdoor work needs extra care around wind. Large diffusion, blackout and reflectors can act like sails and should be secured by experienced crew.

Manage batteries and power properly

  • ✓ Use the supplied or approved chargers
  • ✓ Keep batteries dry and away from excessive heat
  • ✓ Do not leave high-capacity batteries loose with exposed contacts
  • ✓ Stop using a battery that is swollen, damaged or unusually hot
  • ✓ Return batteries, chargers and power cables together

Do not improvise repairs

If equipment fails, stop and contact the rental provider. Tape, glue, forced connectors, third-party firmware changes or opening equipment can turn a small problem into expensive damage.

Report incidents promptly, even when the equipment still appears to work.

Keep a return count

Before leaving the location, use the booking list to count small accessories such as plates, caps, cables, adapters, clamps, media and chargers. Small missing parts are among the easiest things to overlook at wrap.
